I am currently still in the very cold, very snowy country of Canada with some free time on my hands This gives me the perfect opportunity to work on my 2018 reading goal of 50 books. I decided to have a reading goal to make sure I don’t “forget” to sit down and leisurely read a book when I can. So far I’ve completed two, The Hypnotist’s Love Story by the talented Liane Moriarty and the modern classic Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, and they were both very interesting (and drastically different) reads that I recommend!
Last Saturday, Ange and I went to Toronto Eaton Centre’s !ndigo, a book retailer in Canada, for a book haul. Essentially, that just means one purchases a number of books all at once. To be honest, I’m not sure what number is big enough to consider a shopping trip a “haul” but whichever case, I got seven books that I can’t wait to devour.
As made somewhat obvious by the image above, I am most satisfied reading “chick-lit” (a less glamorous term for “women’s literature”) and Liane’s books are just my kinds of poison. Typically, a Liane Moriarty book centers on the lives of a few different women and contains the perfect blend of drama and wit. So far, I’ve read three of her books and I thought they were all marvelous. After my first time reading one of her works, I considered her a favorite author right away. It really shouldn’t come as a surprise that I couldn’t settle for buying just one of her books. Now I’m eager to see if I will love the new books I got as much as I did the previous ones.
In addition to chick-lit, I am also a fan of Thrillers and Mysteries. When I saw The Ice Twins by S.K Tremayne on the shelf, I was a little unimpressed by the cover because I thought it appeared a little cheesy. However, it’s a bit of a mystery to me how after reading the equally cheesy blurb on top of the cover, I got very excited and immediately decided I must have this book. (Oh well, guess I’m just a sucker for the overdramatic.) I checked the reviews on Goodreads when we got home; they indicate that the book is only slightly above average but I’m still feeling rather intrigued.
Emma in the Night is another Thriller/Mystery novel by Wendy Walker whose other works I have not yet had the pleasure of reading. I am very, very excited to start reading this book because people seem to speak highly of the author and it’s been a while since I’ve enjoyed a good Psychological Thriller. Let’s hope this one doesn’t disappoint. (Also, say hi to my sleeping companion Coco!)
Jane Austen is one of those authors I’d heard a lot about from other novels and movies when I was younger but I never really thought to read any of her stuff. To be honest, I know next to nothing about her writing style and the kinds of themes she typically touches upon. I got a copy of Pride and Prejudice mostly out of curiosity and a little bit of “FOMO” (lol). Let’s see if I’ll enjoy it enough to try her other critically-acclaimed works.
Along with Pride and Prejudice is another classic: The Winter of Our Discontent, a modern classic. It dawned on me recently that I really haven’t read much classic literature, and I feel as though I should expand the types of books that I read. John Steinbeck is recognized as a brilliant American novelist – a Nobel Prize awardee, no less! – and I’m eager to see if the book will be my cup of tea.
There you have it – my !ndigo book haul! I’m determined to meet my 2018 reading goal so there might be a couple of book hauls to blog about in the future.
