My First Irish Pub Experience at Doyle’s!

If you follow the news, you’ll know that Ireland is currently experiencing a snow storm called “Emma,” which means that I don’t have school for a few days. Apparently, the country isn’t used to having weather this extreme so the media, the schools, and the public went absolutely hysterical.

Catherine and Alex, whom you have read about in a previous blog post, expressed interest in going out and doing something before there were any severe storm warnings. As you can tell from the existence of this blog post, we didn’t bother canceling our plans despite learning that the storm was about to take a turn for the worse. Instead, we decided to meet at a pub called Doyle’s in the late afternoon for my first proper “pubbing” experience!

Doyle’s was established in 1880 and is located near Trinity College in Dublin. My first impression of the pub is that it was welcoming; I didn’t find the place to be intimidating and I thought it had a sweet charm to it because of its traditional interior. I also have to give it points for not playing excessively loud music that gets in the way of conversations with friends.

Speaking of friends, Catherine brought along Oisin and Kate from her school and we also had fellow UWC graduates Aldo and Camilla join us.

In case you don’t know me well, I’m not much of a drinker and I commonly prefer to socialize in more intimate environments. Most people would probably not expect this given my rambunctious laugh and my typically animated manner of speaking, but I promise that it’s true lol. The idea of socializing in pubs/bars/clubs generally puts me off but I can end up enjoying myself once I’m actually there. Thankfully, this was definitely the case last Wednesday and I had a lot of fun interacting with this group.

Catherine, Kate and I spent way too much time taking dozens of pictures together in an attempt to get one decent shot and I think this may be the only candidate…

Dublin newbies Alex, Camilla and I cautiously walked up to the bar and awkwardly asked each other what we were going to get. It was pretty funny because none of us knew who to approach to order and how to pay. As expected, we all ended up getting the same thing.

Unsurprisingly, they served the legendary Guinness at the pub. All I know about Guinness is that it is a pretty successful brand and it’s Irish. I have yet to discover how it actually tastes and also comprehend the root of its popularity. Who knows, maybe I’ll try it.

Here is a picture of me with my very first “hot brandy,” which is essentially a mixture of brandy, hot water, honey, and lemon. I’m pretty sure I involuntarily grimaced after my first sip because the type of alcohol I consume (on the rare occasions that I actually drink) don’t really taste much like alcohol. I found that the drink was a lot easier on the tongue when there were only a few sips left because it started to taste mostly like honey and lemon lol.

There you have it – my adventure at Doyle’s on 9 College Street! Be sure to check out the place if you find yourself in Dublin and let me know what you think about it in the comments below!
