My First Time at Milk Bar in New York City

I’ve been to New York a few times, but it wasn’t until my most recent trip over the summer with my boyfriend that I was able to visit the famed Milk Bar!

If you don’t know what that is, it’s a small chain of award-winning bakeries owned by the amazing pastry chef Christina Tosi. (And if you haven’t seen her episode on Chef’s Table on Netflix, you must!!)

I am a big fan of baked goods and the ever-so entertaining reality cooking show Masterchef, which Christina used to be a judge for. And ever since I heard of Milk Bar, I’ve pretty much always wanted to go!

One of Christina’s visions for her desserts is that they must incite nostalgia. Some are loosely based on American childhood favorites, and some are quirky concoctions that, oddly enough, seem to work.

One of Milk Bar’s creations that I was especially keen on trying was their Cereal Milk Ice Cream. The ice cream tastes pretty much like the milk in your bowl after you’ve munched up all the cornflakes.

This dessert is pretty simple, but I loved it especially because of its simplicity. It’s light yet tasty, and the crunchy cornflake bits is a lovely touch.

Out of all their scrumptious cookies, my favorite would have to be the Cornflake, Chocolate, Marshmallow Cookie (and yep, that’s all in one cookie haha!) Other flavors are Confetti, Corn, Chocolate-Chocolate, and Blueberry and Cream.

Of course, I can’t forget to mention their signature Compost Cookie. The ingredients are truly brow-raising: potato chips, coffee, and pretzels (among others)!

I’ve only ever shared this on my Instagram stories, but I started learning how to bake last Spring. Since then, I’ve purchased my first whisks, spatulas, cake and muffin pans, and KitchenAid hand mixer! While I don’t plan to pursue baking professionally, I find it to be a relaxing and worthwhile activity.

I am inspired by Christina’s story and the whimsical touch she applies in her creations. I am determined to order one of her cookbooks, particularly her Milk Bar one, for Christmas as a gift to myself.

Hopefully, I can blog about my own baking journey soon. And maybe it can even be about recreating Milk Bar signatures! Stay tuned!
